【1】 Hindi as a Second Language: Improving Visually Grounded Speech with Semantically Similar Samples标题:印地语作为第二语言:用语义相似的样本改进视觉基础语音链接:http://arxiv.org/pdf/2303.17517v1

作者:Hyeonggon Ryu,Arda Senocak,In So Kweon,Joon Son Chung机构: The objective of this work is to explore the learning of visually grounded speech models (VGS) from multilingual perspective. Bilingual VGS models are generally trained with an equal number of spoken captions from both languages. However, in reality, there can be an imbalance among the languages for the available spoken captions. Our key contribution in this work is to leverage the power of a high-resource language in a bilingual visually grounded speech model to improve the performance of a low-resource language. We introduce two methods to distill the knowledge of high-resource language into low-resource languages: (1) incorporating a strong pre-trained high-resource language encoder and (2) using semantically similar spoken captions. Our experiments show that combining these two approaches effectively enables the low-resource language to surpass the performances of monolingual and bilingual counterparts for cross-modal retrieval tasks.

【2】 Sound to Visual Scene Generation by Audio-to-Visual Latent Alignment标题:基于视听潜伏期对准的视听场景生成链接:http://arxiv.org/pdf/2303.17490v1

School of Artificial Intelligence, POSTECH, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, KAIST, University of Michigan, Institute for Convergence Research and Education in Advanced Technology, Yonsei University备注:CVPR 2023摘要:音频如何描述我们周围的世界? How does audio describe the world around us? In this paper, we propose a method for generating an image of a scene from sound. Our method addresses the challenges of dealing with the large gaps that often exist between sight and sound. We design a model that works by scheduling the learning procedure of each model component to associate audio-visual modalities despite their information gaps. The key idea is to enrich the audio features with visual information by learning to align audio to visual latent space. We translate the input audio to visual features, then use a pre-trained generator to produce an image. To further improve the quality of our generated images, we use sound source localization to select the audio-visual pairs that have strong cross-modal correlations. We obtain substantially better results on the VEGAS and VGGSound datasets than prior approaches. We also show that we can control our model's predictions by applying simple manipulations to the input waveform, or to the latent space.

Recently reported state-of-the-art results in visual speech recognition (VSR) often rely on increasingly large amounts of video data, while the publicly available transcribed video datasets are limited in size. In this paper, for the first time, we study the potential of leveraging synthetic visual data for VSR. Our method, termed SynthVSR, substantially improves the performance of VSR systems with synthetic lip movements. The key idea behind SynthVSR is to leverage a speech-driven lip animation model that generates lip movements conditioned on the input speech. The speech-driven lip animation model is trained on an unlabeled audio-visual dataset and could be further optimized towards a pre-trained VSR model when labeled videos are available. As plenty of transcribed acoustic data and face images are available, we are able to generate large-scale synthetic data using the proposed lip animation model for semi-supervised VSR training. We evaluate the performance of our approach on the largest public VSR benchmark - Lip Reading Sentences 3 (LRS3). SynthVSR achieves a WER of 43.3% with only 30 hours of real labeled data, outperforming off-the-shelf approaches using thousands of hours of video. The WER is further reduced to 27.9% when using all 438 hours of labeled data from LRS3, which is on par with the state-of-the-art self-supervised AV-HuBERT method. Furthermore, when combined with large-scale pseudo-labeled audio-visual data SynthVSR yields a new state-of-the-art VSR WER of 16.9% using publicly available data only, surpassing the recent state-of-the-art approaches trained with 29 times more non-public machine-transcribed video data (90,000 hours). Finally, we perform extensive ablation studies to understand the effect of each component in our proposed method.

One challenge of audio captioning is the difficulty of the generalization due to the lack of audio-text paired training data. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective method of dealing with small-scaled datasets by leveraging a pre-trained language model. We keep the language model frozen to maintain the expressivity for text generation, and we only learn to extract global and temporal features from the input audio. To bridge a modality gap between the audio features and the language model, we employ mapping networks that translate audio features to the continuous vectors the language model can understand, called prefixes. We evaluate our proposed method on the Clotho and AudioCaps dataset and show our method outperforms prior arts in diverse experimental settings.

However, researchers face challenges due to the costly and time-consuming collection process of existing audio-language datasets, which are limited in size. To address this data scarcity issue, we introduce WavCaps, the first large-scale weakly-labelled audio captioning dataset, comprising approximately 400k audio clips with paired captions. We sourced audio clips and their raw descriptions from web sources and a sound event detection dataset. However, the online-harvested raw descriptions are highly noisy and unsuitable for direct use in tasks such as automated audio captioning. To overcome this issue, we propose a three-stage processing pipeline for filtering noisy data and generating high-quality captions, where ChatGPT, a large language model, is leveraged to filter and transform raw descriptions automatically. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of WavCaps dataset and evaluate it on multiple downstream audio-language multimodal learning tasks. The systems trained on WavCaps outperform previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) models by a significant margin. Our aspiration is for the WavCaps dataset we have proposed to facilitate research in audio-language multimodal learning and demonstrate the potential of utilizing ChatGPT to enhance academic research. Our dataset and codes are available at https: github.com XinhaoMei WavCaps.

Rare words often have non-trivial pronunciations, and in such cases, human knowledge in the form of a pronunciation lexicon can be useful. We propose a PROnunCiation-aware conTextual adaptER (PROCTER) that dynamically injects lexicon knowledge into an RNN-T model by adding a phonemic embedding along with a textual embedding. The experimental results show that the proposed PROCTER architecture outperforms the baseline RNN-T model by improving the word error rate (WER) by 44% and 57% when measured on personalized entities and personalized rare entities, respectively, while increasing the model size (number of trainable parameters) by only 1%. Furthermore, when evaluated in a zero-shot setting to recognize personalized device names, we observe 7% WER improvement with PROCTER, as compared to only 1% WER improvement with text-only contextual attention.
